Willa Cather's Childhood in Red Cloud, NebraskaCather's Early Years Inspired My Antonia, O Pioneers, Paul's Case
Willa Cather was not born in Red Cloud, but the years she spent in the small Nebraska town provided inspiration for some of her best-known novels about prairie life.
Willa Cather was born in 1873 in the Back Creek Valley near Winchester,Virginia. When she was nine, she moved with her family to Nebraska, where they eventually settled in Red Cloud. Cather spent the rest of her childhood in Red Cloud. Cather went on to attend the University of Nebraska and later joined the staff at McClure’s where in 1908 she was appointed editor. In 1942 she moved to New York, where she met many famous authors. It was Sarah Orne Jewett who advised Cather to draw upon her experiences growing up in Nebraska in her writing. Taking this advice, Cather turned to her roots for inspiration and her novels about life on the prairie became big successes. Cather’s Childhood HomeThe Cathers rented a house on Third and Cedar street in Red Cloud. The family occupied the house from 1884 through 1904. At the time, Willa’s father had an office in town where he worked in real estate and insurance. Willa’s room was upstairs on the north side. Many of her original possessions are displayed in the house, as well as items owned by the family. A description of the house appears in many of her works including Song of the Lark and Old Mrs. Harris. The Town of Cather’s YouthAt the time Willa Cather lived in Red Cloud, the town had a population of around 1,800. The Burlington railroad ran through, bringing diversity to the area. Cather wrote about the people who made up the close-knit community, the immigrants, the farmers, the common people. Another recurring theme in her works was the plight of the artist in a small, work-oriented society. Visitors to Red Cloud can see the Opera House, built in 1885, and once the town’s cultural center. The State Bank Building, Dr. Cook’s drugstore, and many other places that provided the background for Cather’s novels and short stories are still standing on the main street. The Harley House, which sits one block west of the Cather home, was described in My Antonia and was where Willa befriended Annie Pavelka, the main character of one of her most famous novels. The Willa Cather FoundationThe Willa Cather Foundation is located in the old Opera House. It contains a bookstore, art gallery, and performance stage where special events are shown.Tours are provided to Cather’s childhood home and other historic buildings. A three building tour of the town is available, as well as a more detailed seven building tour. A 21 site tour is also available that takes visitors out into the countryside to view places related to Cather’s childhood such as Bladen Road, similar to the one Alexandra traveled in O Pioneers!, Old Mill Dam, site of the mill location in One of Ours, the Cather Homstead, which is described as the Burden Homestead in My Antonia, and many other point of interest. A trip to Red Cloud provides invaluable insight into Willa Cather’s early years and the sights and experiences that inspired her novels about the prairie.
